0 Starting From Zero
Although we deal with the number 0 daily, it is at the same time an invisible and elusive concept. This exhibition investigates zero – as a symbol, a concept, a number – from an interdisciplinary approach, enhancing the dialogue among art, science, technology and philosophy in line with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s interest in interdisciplinarity.
The work ER=EPR by Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand refers to Einstein’s theory in which the denominator is zero, which implies that the centre of a black hole has infinite mass and gravitational pull.
In Jennifer Tee’s art, apparent contradictions are effortlessly brought into symbiosis. Much like the concept of shunya, which in ancient India represented both everything and nothing, providing an important philosophical basis for the number zero.
Jan Robert Leegte’s work focuses on the world of ones and zeros that create our digital universe.
Nicky Assmann’s work follows in the footsteps of the artist collective ZERO, which sought to break with art traditions and turned to daily life as a starting point for its work.
