ART SCIENCE dialogue with Fiona Lutjenhuis and Hijme Stoffels
Join us for the third ART SCIENCE dialogue of Realms of Reality with artist Fiona Lutjenhuis and researcher Hijme Stoffels. Miranda van Holland will be moderating. The conversation forms part of a collaboration with 3D and will take place in the gallery.
The dialogue will center Lutjenhuis’s work and further articulate the conceptual origins and implications of the pieces in the exhibition. The connective throughline of her practice is the depiction and reinterpretation of the religious ideologies of her upbringing. Central to this particular selection are the relationship between naturalistic and fantasmagorical imagery; tensions between simultaneous emotional evocations such as fear/wonder, joy/sorrow, humor/suspicion; and, of course, the complexity and consequences, both positive and negative, of esoteric religions within society and upon the individual.
Fiona Lutjenhuis is a Dutch artist currently living and working in Amsterdam. She uses her unusual childhood to view contemporary discourse through a theosophical lens. In recent years, she has immersed herself in the archives of the sect she grew up with, as well as in the broader religious movements that have been blended or distorted in that group’s ideology. She holds a bachelor’s of fine art from ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnhem and was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam from 2022 to 2024. In 2024 she was nominated for the Scheffer Art Prize, in 2025 for the Prix de Rome, and she won the NN Art Award in 2026. She has exhibited in various museums and project spaces, such as Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 1646, H3H Biennale, Drawing Centre Diepenheim, Noordbrabants Museum and Kunsthal Rotterdam; her work is also held in many notable collections such as that of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Collectie Mondriaan Fonds, and the Dordrecht museum.
Hijme Stoffels is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology of Religion at VU Amsterdam.He is widely recognized as one of the leading experts on contemporary Christian movements in the Netherlands, particularly evangelicalism, orthodox Protestantism, and new religious phenomena. Stoffels’ work bridges theology and sociology, capturing how religious life has transformed over successive generations. He became a pioneer in studying the rise of the Dutch evangelical movement. His 1990 doctoral dissertation, “Wandelen in het licht” (Walking in the Light), remains a foundational academic analysis of this community in the Netherlands. Alongside theologian Gerben Heitink, he co-edited books exploring the phenomenon of people who maintain a personal faith or spirituality but choose to detach from traditional church institutions (Niet zo’n kerkganger, 2003).
