ART SCIENCE dialogue Anthony Ngoya

February 11, 2025 | 4-6 PM

As part of the public program for Foreign Land the VU ART SCIENCE gallery and 3D invite artists and researchers to explore the concept of migration. In a series of ART SCIENCE dialogues we hope to develop a better understanding of migration and its different motivators, history, religion, economic changes, war and colonialism.

The 2nd ART SCIENCE dialogue for Foreign Land will focus on artist Anthony Ngoya and his artworks in the exhibition. Other guests include political scientist Marije Luitjens,  historian Wim Manuhutu and Curator of the academic collection of VU Eline Bos.

Eline Bos is academic heritage curator at the University Library of VU Amsterdam. This collection contains objects from the history of the university, such as portraits of former professors, but also scientific instruments and educational models. She has specialized in 19th and 20th century history of science and scientific heritage.

Marije Luitjens is a peace scholar working at VU Amsterdam. Among other things, she lectures in the Peace and Conflict minor. In her research she focuses specifically on unpacking the complexity of current peace and conflict processes, with the aim to provide new opportunities for peace.

Wim Manuhutu is a historican who teaches history at the VU while also working as an independent advisor and curator. His interests cover colonial and postcolonial history, transnationalism, multiculturalism, heritage and memory, culture and arts.

From 1987-2008 he was one of the directors of the Moluccan Museum in Utrecht.

Art highlights human experience, while science approaches the theme objectively. By bringing together different perspectives from art and science, Foreign Land aims to make a constructive contribution to the social debate on migration.
